BUILT AROUND YOUR HOME

A new deck or an update to the one you have

A new deck begins with the available space and the connection to your home. An existing deck needs a review of its condition before deciding which parts can stay. Surface wear and structural concerns are different issues; new deck boards alone are not an assessment of the supporting structure.

01

Define the work from the ground up

Discuss the intended deck size, access points, stairs, railings and finish. For a remodel, include photographs of the deck surface, rails, stairs and visible underside where it is safe to do so. The existing condition and proposed changes will determine the scope that needs further evaluation.

02

Choose materials with daily use in mind

Appearance, maintenance preferences and exposure all matter when discussing decking. Bring examples of the finish you like, but review the supporting details and installation requirements before making a final material choice. Rails and stairs should be considered as part of the same project.

03

See real deck work

MPR’s deck gallery shows existing conditions and finished deck surfaces. The featured photograph shows gray decking with wood railings. The gallery can help you compare the overall appearance of a refreshed surface and railing arrangement without assuming your deck has the same underlying condition.

LET’S PLAN YOUR PROJECT

Plan access and project requirements

Site access, demolition, support conditions and local approval requirements can influence a deck project. Discuss these during the estimate process. The proposed scope should establish which checks and approvals are needed before construction is scheduled.

GOOD QUESTIONS. CLEAR ANSWERS.

Before you get started

Can an existing deck be remodeled?

Deck remodeling is one of MPR’s published services. What can remain depends on the deck’s condition and the work proposed.

Do you work on railings and stairs?

MPR lists railing installation and staircase building and remodeling. Include these details when describing your deck project.

Can you estimate from a photograph alone?

Photographs are a useful starting point, but they may not reveal the condition of supports, connections or other concealed areas. Further review may be needed.
